The History of Earrings

Earrings are a type of handcrafted jewelry that is attach to the ear in some fashion – most commonly through a hole pierced in the earlobe. These decorative creations can be made of almost any material: metal, beads, bone, plastic, glass, clay or gemstones stones. They can be as simple as a tiny metal hoop or they may contain elaborate hand engraving, precious stones or feathers.

Earrings have been around for thousands of years and ear piercing is one of the oldest forms of body modification. Earrings didn’t start out as fashion accessory. During 3000BC is when they are believed to have made their appearance. At that time, earrings were used to help folks identify themselves to strangers. The earrings gave clues as to the wearer’s religious, political or tribal affiliation. Earrings could be a statement of wealth and power — or a shameful label of inferiority to those who were enslaved.

Throughout the ages, earrings have been worn by both sexes. Carved images of soldiers of the Persian Empire - found on some of the surviving walls palace walls – show them wearing a ring in their ear. During this time, earrings were commonly just a gold hoop that was either flattened, bent or twisted into different designs.

Handmade designer jewelry began to its appearance during the first century of the Roman Empire. Upper-class women would show off their wealth with fancy ear adornments. It was common for these women to try to out-do each other. Each wanted to have the largest, most stunning earrings the other women had ever seen. Soon gemstones were added to make these accessories even more spectacular.

As fashion changed, collars moved higher, hats got bigger, and hair/wigs became more elaborate — the need for earrings diminished. They could easily become tangled in fabrics or hair – that is, if they could even be seen at all.

During the Elizabethan and Victorian Eras, earrings made a bit of a comeback. Necklines dropped and hairstyles were more subdued. Earrings became fashionable again; worn by both men and women. Dangle or large drop earrings with gemstones and/or pearls were the most popular. The earring also joined with other stunning accessories to create a jewelry ensemble. Handmade rings, earring, pendants and bracelets would coordinate to compliment each other.

During the 20th century the screw and clip-on earrings became quite popular. These were usually large earrings and incorporated many new materials and designs. Some women were afraid that ear piercing might not be sanitary, so the clip-on was a fantastic option.
